What is Functional Medicine/Diet & Nutrition?

Functional Medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention and treatment of complex, chronic diseases. It is a holistic patient-specific approach where no two patients with the same condition are treated in exactly the same way. Functional Medicine allows for the determination of the underlying cause of your condition through the use of technologically advanced laboratory testing and other diagnostic techniques. These are not standard medical test, but tests that go to the next level investigating the biochemical and metabolic glitches likely to cause a specific disease process. Specialized laboratories using advanced testing procedures are used.

Functional Medicine practitioners are trained to interpret and evaluate complex test results. Based on these results, treatment is individualized and includes a unique combination of prescribed botanical and natural supplementation, detoxification programs, therapeutic dietary plans, exercise and periodic re-testing. This science-based approach addresses the clinical imbalances that lead to many chronic conditions such as:

  • Type II Diabetes
  • Thyroid Conditions
  • Auto-Immune Conditions
  • Hashimoto’s Disease
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
  • Sleep Disorders
  • Dizziness, Vertigo and other Balance Disorders.
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • ADD / ADHD - Autism Spectrum

The human body functions as a network of interconnected systems that affect each other, so Functional Medicine treats the whole body rather than just looking at a single organ system or just looking at symptoms.

Because each body is unique, Functional Medicine considers each patient’s biochemical individuality. Functional Medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic diseases. For years, there has been a gap between emerging research in science and the integration of new technology into healthcare practices, particularly in the area of complex, chronic illness.

As a 21st Century evolution in the practice of healthcare, Functional Medicine bridges this gap.

Within the scope of Functional Medicine, the patient becomes a vital and active partner in treatment. The patient has the potential to change the outcome of disease.

How does Functional Medicine differ from the traditional practice of medicine?

The approach of traditional healthcare is to regard symptoms as indicators of a suspected health condition. Laboratory tests are then used to identify or confirm the diagnosis. For example, for a patient diagnosed with Type II Diabetes the initial symptoms may be constant thirst, headaches and sluggishness. A traditional “standard of care” protocol has the doctor order blood work and if the patient’s glucose is found to be above 126 a diagnosis of Type II Diabetes is given. The next step in this standard of care protocol is the prescription of an oral medication with the goal of lowering the patient’s blood sugar levels.

Never in this traditional approach is the question “Why is this patient diabetic?” asked or answered. Most treatments based upon this approach are heavily dependent upon pharmaceutical drugs which generally do not address the underlying cause of the condition. They only work to mask symptoms. Of further concern is the fact that many drugs have toxic side effects and mask symptoms, making subsequent attempts at a more complete or accurate diagnosis less viable.

Traditional medicine focuses on the treatment of symptoms vs. Functional Medicine which determines and treats the underlying cause of a condition. Functional Medicine gets to the root of illness.

Functional Medicine does not focus on identifying specific symptoms. Instead, it focuses on finding and addressing the root cause of the symptoms. By utilizing functional laboratory assessments that evaluate bio-chemical individuality and metabolic processes, Functional Medicine can identify the root cause of many complex chronic health conditions. This is accomplished by contrasting a patient’s lab assessments with healthy physiological ranges and pinpointing abnormalities and contributing factors thus exposing the root cause. Based upon these scientific findings, Functional Medicine doctors can offer individualized, therapeutic treatment options to restore normal function and physiology. As a result, the root cause and thus the associated symptoms will be eliminated.

Within the Functional Medicine approach laboratory testing becomes vital.

Testing may include:

A Complete Blood Panel including a thyroid panel, a complete metabolic panel, a lipid panel and a complete blood chemistry with auto differential. These tests will assess your thyroid, liver, red/white blood cells and gut function.

An Adrenal Stress Index.
This test measures cortisol levels and is a must for anyone with a sleep disorder and/or Type II Diabetes. Remember the adrenal glands also play a role in the regulation of blood sugar.

Immune Panels.
These are important because patients with Chronic Conditions may also have auto immune conditions. This panel will determine if there is any dysregulation of the immune system.

Hormone Panels. If there is imbalance in the hormones this can directly affect all Chronic Conditions.

Sensitivity Testing. This testing will determine if you are sensitive to gluten, milk, eggs, yeast and soy. A sensitivity to any of these may make Chronic Conditions worse as it increases inflammation in the brain and other parts of your body.

DNA Stool Panel. This is an advanced, sensitive panel which will determine if there is an underlying infection in the intestinal track which may contribute to your Chronic Condition.

Once the laboratory results have been evaluated a more complete diagnosis of your specific condition may be given as well as a treatment protocol that is individualized to each patient. The goal of all treatment programs is to restore normal function and physiology as much as possible.
